How to Move Photos and Files to the Cloud Without Losing Anything

Moving photos and personal files to cloud storage can make life easier, but a careful plan helps prevent duplicates, missing files, and account surprises.

Cloud storage can make your photos, documents, and personal files available on every device. It can also create confusion when folders are duplicated, storage fills up, or a file is moved before it has finished uploading. A simple plan makes the transition safer.

Step 1: Take Inventory

Before moving anything, look at where your files currently live:

• Computers: Check the Desktop, Documents, Downloads, and Pictures folders.
• Phones and tablets: Review camera rolls, screenshots, downloads, and messaging apps.
• External drives: Include older photo libraries and files stored for safekeeping.
• Existing cloud accounts: Check iCloud, Google Drive, Google Photos, OneDrive, and other services.

Make a list of the files you cannot replace. Those should have a second backup before you begin.

Step 2: Choose One Main Cloud Location

Step 5: Secure the Account

Turn on multi-factor authentication, use a unique password, review sharing settings, and confirm that your recovery phone number or email address is current. Your cloud account may contain years of personal photos and documents, so it deserves the same care as your bank account.
